Quick answer

This converter handles all common metric and imperial weight units: milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tons, ounces, pounds, stone, US short tons, and UK long tons. Enter a value, pick your units, and the result appears immediately. All conversions use internationally defined factors and run entirely in your browser.

How to use this converter

Type a value in the input field, select the unit you are converting from, then select the unit you want. The result updates as you type. The swap button reverses the direction without retyping. Quick conversion buttons at the top jump straight to the most common pairs: kg to lbs, lbs to kg, g to oz, and oz to g.

All calculations run locally in your browser. No data is sent anywhere. Results use exact conversion factors rather than approximations.

Metric weight units

The metric system measures mass in grams, scaling by powers of 1000. The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass and is the most widely used unit in science, medicine, and international trade.

Metric ton (tonne)t1,000 kgBulk goods, shipping, steel
Kilogramkg1 kgBody weight, groceries, science
Gramg0.001 kgCooking, nutrition labels
Milligrammg0.000001 kgMedicine, supplements, chemistry

Imperial and traditional units

Imperial weight units (the avoirdupois system) are anchored to the pound, which is defined as exactly 453.59237 grams by international agreement. All other imperial weight units follow from this.

A note on ounces: this converter uses the avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g), which is the standard for all everyday goods. Precious metals use a different unit, the troy ounce, which is 31.1035 g. If you are weighing gold, silver, or other precious metals, do not use this converter for ounces without accounting for the difference. The troy ounce is about 9.7% heavier than the avoirdupois ounce.

The three tons explained

Three different units are all called a "ton," and they are not interchangeable. Mixing them up in shipping, engineering, or commodities trading is a costly mistake.

NameAlso calledIn poundsIn kilogramsUsed where
Metric tonTonne2,204.62 lb1,000 kg exactlyInternational trade, science, most of the world
US short tonTon (US)2,000 lb exactly907.185 kgUnited States industry, agriculture
UK long tonImperial ton2,240 lb exactly1,016.047 kgUK (historical), some Commonwealth countries

The metric ton is the most common in international contexts. When a commodity price is quoted "per ton" in a financial or trade document without qualification, it usually means the metric ton. When you see "ton" in a US context, it usually means the short ton.

Common conversions

Kilograms and pounds

1 lb = 0.453592 kg exactly. 1 kg = 2.20462 lb.

  • 70 kg to lbs: 70 × 2.20462 = 154.32 lbs
  • 150 lbs to kg: 150 × 0.453592 = 68.039 kg
  • A typical adult body weight of 75 kg = 165.35 lbs = 11 st 11.3 lb

Grams and ounces

1 oz = 28.3495 g exactly (avoirdupois). 1 g = 0.035274 oz.

  • 100 g to oz: 100 ÷ 28.3495 = 3.527 oz
  • 500 g to lbs: 500 × 0.453592 = 1.1023 lbs (just over 1 lb)
  • 1 lb to g: 453.592 g (useful for recipes converting US to metric)

Stone and pounds

1 stone = 14 lbs exactly. 1 stone = 6.35029 kg.

  • 10 stone to kg: 10 × 6.35029 = 63.503 kg
  • 11 stone 5 lbs: (11 × 14) + 5 = 159 lbs = 72.121 kg
  • To convert kg to stone: divide kg by 6.35029, then separate the decimal into whole stones and pounds × 14

Metric tons and other units

  • 1 metric ton to lbs: 1,000 × 2.20462 = 2,204.62 lbs
  • 1 US short ton to kg: 2,000 × 0.453592 = 907.185 kg
  • 1 metric ton vs 1 US ton: the metric ton is 92.815 kg (about 204.6 lbs) heavier

Common mistakes

Mixing up the three types of ton

A metric ton (1,000 kg), US short ton (907 kg), and UK long ton (1,016 kg) differ by up to 10%. When a price or weight is expressed in "tons" without qualification, check which system the source is using. In international trade and scientific contexts, assume metric. In US domestic contexts, assume short tons.

Using the avoirdupois ounce for precious metals

Gold, silver, platinum, and other precious metals are quoted and traded in troy ounces (31.1035 g), not avoirdupois ounces (28.3495 g). A troy ounce is about 9.7% heavier. If you type "1 oz" into this converter, you get the avoirdupois result. For precious metals, multiply your troy ounces by 31.1035 to get grams directly.

Entering mixed stone and pounds as a decimal

"12 stone 7 lbs" is not 12.7 stone. It is 12 + (7/14) = 12.5 stone = 79.379 kg. To convert a mixed stone-and-pounds value, convert the pounds to a fraction of a stone first (divide by 14), then add to the whole stone number before entering it in the converter.

FAQs

How do I convert kg to pounds?

Multiply kilograms by 2.20462. Example: 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.32 lbs. For a quick mental estimate, multiply by 2.2 - this gives a result about 0.21% lower than the exact value, which is fine for everyday purposes but not for precision work.

How many ounces are in a pound?

Exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces. This is the standard for all everyday goods including food, postal items, and body care products. Precious metals use the troy system, where 1 troy pound = 12 troy ounces, but the troy pound itself is rarely used. Gold and silver prices are almost always quoted per troy ounce.

What is the difference between a metric ton and a US ton?

A metric ton (also written "tonne") is exactly 1,000 kg or 2,204.62 lbs. A US short ton is exactly 2,000 lbs or 907.185 kg. The metric ton is about 10% heavier. A UK long ton sits between them at 2,240 lbs or 1,016.05 kg. In international trade, "ton" almost always means metric unless the context is specifically US domestic.

How do I convert grams to ounces?

Divide by 28.3495, or multiply by 0.035274. Example: 250 g ÷ 28.3495 = 8.818 oz. The exact factor is derived from 1 lb = 453.59237 g and 1 lb = 16 oz, so 1 oz = 453.59237 ÷ 16 = 28.34952... g.

What is a stone, and where is it used?

A stone is exactly 14 pounds or 6.35029 kg. It is used almost exclusively in the UK and Ireland for expressing human body weight. You will see it on UK bathroom scales and in British medical contexts ("the patient weighs 12 stone 4"). It is not used in the US, not used in science, and not used in any international context.

How do I convert pounds to kilograms?

Multiply by 0.453592 (or divide by 2.20462). Example: 150 lbs × 0.453592 = 68.039 kg. The exact definition is 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, set by international agreement in 1959.

What is the difference between weight and mass?

Mass is the amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms. Weight is the gravitational force acting on that mass, measured in Newtons. On the surface of the Earth, an object with a mass of 1 kg has a weight of about 9.81 N. In everyday language, the two terms are used interchangeably. All values on this page are mass conversions, which is what people mean when they say "I weigh 70 kg."
